Welcome to Year 1

Class Teacher: Mr Cullen

Teaching Assistants: Mrs Asad

In Year One the children are beginning to learn how to become independent and confident learners.  In English, we will be focusing on how to use capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. It is also important for the children to form letters correctly so handwriting will be a big focus.  The children will learn how to spell common words throughout their work. Reading skills are incredibly important in Year 1 as we take a strong focus on phonics which is the key to reading and writing. Please ensure that phonics and reading are practiced regularly to support children’s development in this area. In maths, the children will be doing lots of number work.  They will be counting out objects, adding and subtracting numbers, learning to form numbers correctly and will be counting in 2’s to name a few things.  In Science, children will be learning about the human body and senses to start the year.  We will be investigating how our body works through different experiments and observations, such as how our senses of sight and smell work. The children will be using purple mash this year for computing, it is important that they practice this at home to gain confidence in the early stages of computer literacy. Geography, RE and PE will also be taught each week, and the children will learn a range of new skills within these subjects.
